Homeopathy is a form of
alternative medicine that treats a disease with heavily diluted preparations created from substances that would ordinarily cause effects similar to the disease's symptoms. As first expounded by German physician,
Samuel Hahnemann, in 1796, homeopathic preparations are
serially diluted, with shaking ("succussing") after each step, under the belief that this increases the effect of the treatment. This dilution often continues until no molecules of the original substance remain.
General philosophy Homeopathy is a
vitality philosophy in that it interprets diseases and sickness as caused by disturbances in a hypothetical
vital force or
life force and sees these disturbances as manifesting themselves in unique symptoms. Homeopathy maintains that the vital force has the ability to react and adapt to internal and external causes, which homeopaths refer to as the "law of susceptibility". The law of susceptibility states that a negative state of mind can attract hypothetical disease entities called "miasms" to invade the body and produce symptoms of diseases. However, Hahnemann rejected the notion of a disease as a separate thing or invading entity and insisted that it was always part of the "living whole".
Revival in the late 20th Century Main article:
Regulation and prevalence of homeopathy The
Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (sponsored by New York Senator, and Homeopathic Physician
Royal Copeland) of 1938 recognized homeopathic remedies as drugs. By the 1950s there were only 75 pure homeopaths practicing in the U.S. However, in the mid to late 1970s, homeopathy made a significant comeback and sales of some homeopathic companies increased tenfold. Greek homeopath
George Vithoulkas performed a "great deal of research to update the scenarios and refine the theories and practice of homeopathy" beginning in the 1970s, and it was revived worldwide; for example, Brazil in the 1970s and Germany in the 1980s. The medical profession started to integrate such ideas in the 1990s
[171] and big mainstream pharmacies started competing for this business.
